W3C SMIL Event

SMIL adds support for timing and media synchronization to the web.

SMIL

SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) is designed to enable multimedia presentation on the web.

SMIL presents compositions that can be made up of audio, video, images, text, and other media types.

SMIL is a class HTML language based on XML.

HTML+TIME

HTML+TIME refers to the timed multimedia interactive extension for HTML (Timed Interactive Multimedia Extensions for HTML). Its purpose is to add timing and synchronization support for SMIL 1.0 to HTML.

HTML+TIME was submitted to W3C by the following organizations: Microsoft, Macromedia, Compaq/Digital, and Digital Renaissance.

HTML+SMIL

HTML+SMIL (an amendment to HTML+TIME) was mentioned in an early SMIL 2.0 working draft.

After SMIL 2.0 became a W3C recommended standard, HTML+SMIL was removed from SMIL 2.0 and became an independent working draft named XHTM+SMIL.

XHTML+SMIL

XHTML+SMIL provides support for SMIL 2.0 functionality in XHTML, such as actions, media, timing, synchronization, and direct conversion.

XHTML+SMIL is currently a W3C record, intended to serve as a foundation for integrating SMIL into XHTML.

History of HTML/XHTML+SMIL

15. June 1998
SMIL 1.0 became a W3C recommended standard.
18. September 1998
As a proposal that added SMIL 1.0 timing and synchronization to HTML, HTML+TIME was submitted to W3C by Microsoft, Macromedia, Compaq/Digital, and Digital Renaissance.
25. February 2000
HTML+TIME, renamed as HTML+SMIL, was added to the SMIL 2.0 working draft.
22. June 2000
HTML+SMIL was removed from the SMIL 2.0 working draft.
07. August 2001
SMIL 2.0 became a W3C standard.
07. August 2001
HTML+SMIL became an independent working draft and was renamed to XHTML+SMIL.
31. January 2002
XHTML+SMIL was resubmitted as a W3C record.
