Mozilla Project
Mozilla is a framework for building web applications.
What is Mozilla?
Mozilla is not a web browser.
Mozilla is a framework for building web applications using web standards such as CSS, XML, RDF, etc.
The code of Mozilla is used in various types of web applications, including Netscape 6 and 7 browsers, other types of browsers such as Firefox and Camino, chat clients, news clients, email clients, games, and other web applications for Windows, Linux, and Mac.
Mozilla is an open-source web development project that develops program code used in the Mozilla Application Suite.
The Mozilla Application Suite is a complete set of web applications (browsers, chat clients, news clients, email clients, etc.).
Currently, browsers based on the Mozilla code are the second largest browser family on the Internet, accounting for about 30% of Internet communication. The Mozilla browser is known for its good support of web standards.
Mozilla Project
The purpose of the Mozilla Project was to develop Netscape as an open-source project.
In November 1998, AOL (America Online) acquired Netscape.
The development of Netscape's core engine was transferred to an open-source project named "The Mozilla Project".
After April 2006, in the context that the main goal of the Mozilla Foundation was to gradually phase out the Mozilla suite and focus mainly on the Firefox/Thunderbird/SeaMonkey project, this project was renamed SeaMonkey.
Mozilla Foundation
The Mozilla Foundation was established in July 2003, which was when AOL fired employees involved in the Mozilla open-source browser team.
Mozilla Foundation's roadmap
Mozilla decided to develop a new development roadmap. The following are some of the key points in the new roadmap:
- Focusing on independent applications (Firefox browser, Thunderbird email/news application, and independent designers)
- Making Firefox and Thunderbird Mozilla's primary products
- Maintaining the SeaMonkey (now the Mozilla browser) application suite for enterprises and organizations with large-scale Mozilla deployments
- Using a one-year development cycle, the Mozilla 1.4 branch was maintained as the 'distributor/vendor' branch used by the organization
- Fixing the critical Gecko layout architecture vulnerabilities. All Mozilla applications benefit from these Gecko improvements.
- Strive for excellence. Do less, but do it better!
Mozilla's products
- Mozilla - Application suite
- Firefox - Independent browser
- Thunderbird - An email and newsgroup client
- Camino - Browser for MAC
- Composer - Web page editor

The confusing Mozilla name
It was the first Netscape browser that used the code engine named Mozilla.Netscape 1.0 is based on the code engine named Mozilla 1.0 driven by the code engine. Netscape 2.0 used Mozilla 2.0, Netscape 3.0 used Mozilla 3.0, and Netscape 4.0 used Mozilla 4.0.
In 1998, Netscape 4 made its source code public - at the same time, the development of Netscape 5 was established as an open-source project.
This open-source project that created Netscape 5 is called "The Mozilla Project". It is strange that the code engine of the Mozilla project is called Gecko.
Unfortunately, after the release of 4.0, it took Netscape more than three and a half years to develop the next generation browser. This delay destroyed the possibility of Netscape as a reliable alternative to Microsoft's IE browser. Not long after the Mozilla project was launched, Microsoft released its IE 5.0, and before Netscape managed to release a working browser, Microsoft's IE 6.0 was also ready.
based on Gecko M18 (Milestone 18) of Netscape 6.0 which was released in November 2000.
After the release of Netscape 6.0, the Mozilla project began to develop a browser based on a name Gecko 1.0 engine's Netscape 7.
Netscape 6 and 7 were built on top of Mozilla, and Netscape and Mozilla are almost the same application suite.
Netscape 7 claims to use a name Gecko 1.0 the code engine.
At this moment, the Mozilla project is developing a browser named Firefox the new browser of Mozilla. In the past, Firefox was known as Mozilla Firebird(while Mozilla Firebird was previously known as Phoenix, it claims to be Mozilla a new version).
Feeling confused? At least I think so.
To resolve the issue of name confusion, it is necessary to establish a legal issue number (I believe so).
