Från ASCII till UTF-8
ASCII är den första teckenkodsstandarden. ASCII definierar 128 tecken som kan användas på internet: siffror (0-9), bokstäver (A-Z) och några specialtecken, t.ex.: ! $ + - ( ) @ < >.
ISO-8859-1 är standardteckenuppsättningen för HTML 4. Denna teckenuppsättning stöder 256 olika teckenkoder. HTML 4 stöder också UTF-8.
ANSI (Windows-1252) är den ursprungliga Windows-teckenuppsättningen. ANSI är lika med ISO-8859-1, men med 32 extra tecken.
HTML5-standarden uppmuntrar webbutvecklare att använda UTF-8-teckenuppsättningen, som täcker nästan alla tecken och symboler i världen!

ASCII-teckenuppsättning
ASCII använder värden mellan 0 och 31 (och 127) som kontrolltecken.
ASCII använder värden mellan 32 och 126 för bokstäver, siffror och symboler.
ASCII använder inte värden mellan 128 och 255.
ANSI Teckenuppsättning (Windows-1252)
För värden mellan 0 och 127 är ANSI samma som ASCII.
ANSI har ett särskilt teckenuppsättning, värdena för vilka är mellan 128 och 159.
För värden mellan 160 och 255 är ANSI samma som UTF-8.
ISO-8859-1 Teckenuppsättning
För värden mellan 0 och 127 är 8859-1 samma som ASCII.
8859-1 använder inte värden mellan 128 och 159.
För värden mellan 160 och 255 är 8859-1 samma som UTF-8.
UTF-8 Teckenuppsättning
För värden mellan 0 och 127 är UTF-8 samma som ASCII.
UTF-8 använder inte värden mellan 128 och 159.
För värden mellan 160 och 255 är UTF-8 samma som ANSI och 8859-1.
UTF-8 fortsätter från värde 256 och innehåller över 10000 olika tecken.
