HTML Colors

The color is composed of red, green, and blue mixed together.

Color Values

Colors are defined by a hexadecimal symbol, which consists of the values of red, green, and blue (RGB).

The minimum value of each color is 0 (hexadecimal: #00). The maximum value is 255 (hexadecimal: #FF).

This table shows the specific effects of mixing three colors:

Color Names

Most browsers support a set of color names.

Tip:Only 16 color names are supported by the W3C's HTML4.0 standard. They are: aqua, black, blue, fuchsia, gray, green, lime, maroon, navy, olive, purple, red, silver, teal, white, yellow.

If you need to use other colors, you need to use the hexadecimal color value.

Web Safe Colors

Several years ago, when most computers only supported 256 colors, a series of 216 web safe colors were recommended as web standards. The reason for this was that Microsoft and Mac operating systems used 40 different reserved fixed system colors (each using about 20).

We are not sure how meaningful this is today, as more and more computers are capable of handling millions of colors, but the choice is still yours.

216 Cross-Platform Colors

Initially, 216 cross-platform web safe colors were used to ensure that all computers could correctly display all colors when using a 256-color palette.
