XML Schema extension element

Definition and usage

The extension element extends the elements of simpleType or complexType.

Attribute Description
id Optional. Specifies a unique ID for the element.
base Required. Specifies the name of the built-in data type, simpleType, or complexType element.
xml:lang Optional. Specifies the language used in the content.

(The ? symbol is declared within the extension element, which can appear zero or one times, and the * symbol declares that the element can appear zero or more times.)

Example 1

The following example extends an existing simpleType element by adding an attribute:

The following example extends an existing complexType element by adding three elements:
