HTML DOM cols attribute

Definition and Usage

The cols attribute can be set or returned to set the number and size of the columns in the frameset.

A list of pixels or percentages separated by commas defines the number and width of the columns:

Syntax

framesetObject.cols=col1,col2,col3....

Example

In our example, we will first create an HTML document containing a frameset with two columns. Each column is set to 50% of the browser window:

<html>
<frameset cols="50%,50%">
  <frame src="frame_cols.htm">
  <frame src="frame_a.htm">
</frameset>
</html>

The HTML document "frame_cols.htm" is placed in the first column, and the HTML document "frame_a.htm" is placed in the second column.

The following is the source code of "frame_cols.htm":

<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function changeCols()
  {
  parent.document.getElementById("main").cols="30%,70%"
  }
function restoreCols()
  {
  parent.document.getElementById("main").cols="50%,50%"
  }
</script>
</head>
<body>
<input type="button" onclick="changeCols()" />
value="Change column size" />
<input type="button" onclick="restoreCols()" />
value="Restore column size" />
</body>
</html>
